The M.Tech program in Biotechnology

The M.Tech program in Biotechnology under Visvesvaraya Technological University (VTU), Belagavi was commenced in the year 2011 with an intake of 18 students. The students who have a B.E. degree in Biotechnology/Food Technology/Bioinformatics/Chemical Engineering/Medical Electronics/Biomedical Engineering with a valid PGCET score/GATE score can enroll to the program. Students can also enroll through management quota. The M.Tech program is designed based on the industry requirement and to have sufficient specialization knowledge of Biotechnology domain. The postgraduate program was granted autonomy in the year 2016. The M.Tech program in Biotechnology is accredited by National Board of Accreditation for 2 years from 2018-2020. This program offers core subjects such as Molecular Biology, Genetic Engineering, Immunology, Bioprocess engineering, Tissue Engineering, Food Technology, Proteomics and Genomics, Applied Bioinformatics, Upstream and Downstream processing, Pharmaceuticals, Nanotechnology. The M.Tech program offers the privilege to pursue internship and projects in industries and R&D labs of varied array and domain of life sciences, such as BIOCON, BIOZEEN, IISc., DFRL, CFTRI, GKVK, C-Camp, various public and private sectors.

 

PROGRAMME OUTCOMES (PO)

M.Tech in Biotechnology graduates will be able to:

PO1: Independently carry out research/investigation and development work to solve problems related to biotechnological sector

PO2: Write and present a substantial technical report/document in the fields of health, pharma, bioprocess, food and Agriculture.

PO3: Apply advanced tools and techniques to design and formulate the solutions for various biotechnological challenges

PO4: Collaborate with the confluence of various domains of Biotech from academic, industry and research institutes of national or international repute, with the commitment to lifelong learning

PO5: Design and develop projects related to biotechnological and allied branches keeping performance and cost constraints into consideration.

PO6: Apply bio-engineering solutions to societal and ethical needs with focus on sustainability

Program Specific Criteria (PSC)

Lead Society: American Society of Agricultural and Biological Engineers

 

PSC1: The curriculum of program consists of basics of Biotechnology, Chemical engineering and informatics knowledge for Biological processes. The curriculum prepares students to analyze and develop techniques or methods to solve problems encountered in applying Biotechnology.

PSC2: The curriculum of program includes advance core and electives courses together with laboratory, seminar, industry visit, assignment and tutorials emphasizing on production, processing, and management of biological, agricultural, food, health and natural resources.

PSC3: The curriculum of program also includes internship and project work which prepare students to apply biotechnological solutions and professional skills with focus on production, management and research.
