The Department of Civil Engineering was established in the year 1963 and has grown into a full-fledged department with specialization in all major areas of civil engineering. The academic programs of the department are B.E., M.Tech (Structural engineering and Highway Technology) and Doctoral programs. The faculty members have received advanced degrees and/or training from highly reputed universities across the country. The department has been recognized as research center under VTU and has laboratories with state of the art equipment to facilitate research work. The faculties have been guiding doctoral programs for regular research scholars and in-service engineers from various private and government organizations. The department has also been recognized for research at national and international levels. HSMI, New Delhi has established an exclusive HUDCO chair, currently working towards demonstrating low cost sustainable materials and construction technologies for field engineers of urban local bodies.
The department also offers consultancy services in major areas of civil engineering and conducts training programs for in-service engineers from reputed government organizations such as PWD, PRAMC, BBMP etc.
The department nurtures students for overall development by encouraging the students to participate in curricular, co-curricular and extra-curricular activities.The department has well established interactions with outside world (institutions and industry) through industrial visits, expert lectures, workshops, internships etc. With a good placement record, the department facilitates the students placements in reputed companies such as L&T ECC, Shapoorji Pallonji, Brigade group, Atkins, Total environment, TCS, Cognizant technologies and Accenture to list a few.
To address the societal issues, the department is actively involved in various research works related to environmental concerns. In this regard, the faculty are involved in projects with KSPCB. The department has facilitated installation of Air, Water and noise monitoring stations in the institution.
The department has secured several projects funded by reputed national agencies such as DST, AICTE, ISRO and VTU etc.
